Weekly cleaning

Weekly suits households that generate mess quickly — families with children, homes with pets. A house with young children and a dog deteriorates at a completely different rate to a single-occupancy flat. Weekly cleaning keeps it consistently presentable rather than letting things build to the point where catching up takes much longer.

It also works well for people who simply find cleaning stressful and want it removed from their lives entirely. Some people do not want to think about it at all — weekly removes it as a concern.

Fortnightly cleaning

Fortnightly is the most popular choice. It works for couples and small families who do light tidying between visits. Things do not get out of hand in two weeks, but the cleaner still gets through enough to make a real difference each time.

If you are not sure what frequency to start with, fortnightly is a sensible default. You can always adjust after a few visits.

Monthly cleaning

Monthly is best for people who do their own cleaning regularly and just want a thorough deep-clean of the areas they find time-consuming — oven, bathrooms, behind furniture. If you are a tidy person and genuinely keep on top of daily cleaning, monthly professional visits top it up without being unnecessary.

The downside of monthly is that dust, limescale, and grease have a full month to build up. Each visit takes longer because there is more to work through. Over time this can become less cost-effective than fortnightly if you are not doing much maintenance in between.

What actually affects how quickly a home gets dirty

The right frequency is more about your household than your house size. The main factors:

• Number of people: More people means more mess. A one-bed flat with one person gets dirty much slower than a three-bed house with four adults.
• Pets: Dogs and cats shed constantly. Pet hair gets everywhere and builds up faster than most people expect. If you have a dog, you probably need cleaning more often than you think.

What a regular clean actually covers

• Dusting surfaces, shelves, and skirting boards
• Bathroom cleaning — toilet, sink, bath or shower, mirrors
• Kitchen surfaces, hob, sink, and inside microwave

What a regular clean does not usually include: oven cleaning, inside fridge, inside cupboards, windows (exterior), or deep bathroom limescale removal. Those are better handled periodically as add-ons or as a separate occasional deep clean.

If your home has not been professionally cleaned recently, it often makes sense to start with a one-off or deep clean before setting up a regular schedule. This gets the property to a baseline standard — cleared limescale, oven done, behind furniture dusted — so that subsequent regular visits maintain that standard rather than spending the whole time catching up.

Starting regular cleaning from a clean baseline means the cleaner can work faster and cover more on each visit, which makes the regular clean more effective and better value.
